My wonderful husband called me from work yesterday and invited me out to dinner. Our anniversary is later this month and we are planning an evening out then, so I was completely surprised. Katie and Steve willingly offered to take care of the youngest kids, which was another pleasant surprise.
Mike and I went to Lone Star Steakhouse. The steak wasn't particularly good, but the conversation and time without interruptions was delightful. We spent a leisurely 1 1/2 hours at the restaurant and then headed for home. Mike remembered that we were out of ice and wanted to stop and get a bag from the grocery store.
He asked if I wanted the car left running while he ran inside. I said that the weather was not too cold and to turn off the car. After Mike had left, I remembered that this grocery had milk on sale for $1.99, limit 2/customer. Milk has been selling for $3.49 a gallon and I decided that we should pick up some for the freezer. So I locked my door and began searching the store for Mike.
After I found Mike, he asked if I had grabbed the keys out of the ignition. Why would someone leave keys in an ignition? The keys were locked in the car and we were 2 miles from home. I didn't have my key ring with me, so we were unable to get into Mike's car. So, we began a "Romantic Moonlit Walk" home. After about a 1/4 of the way, Mike called Katie and asked her to drive the van and pick us up. Katie doesn't have her drivers license yet, just her permit. She was able to drive on residential side streets the entire way, but I am really uncomfortable having her drive before she gets her license.
We watched as a van slowly made its way up the street. I don't think she went faster than 15 miles/hour. I thanked her and then teased her about driving so slowly. With a huge grin she said, "Mom, this was so cool, don't ruin the moment." What a character!
