A Tale of Two Bedrooms

We've been plugging away at getting things done at the other house. While checking the calendar, I realized that we will be moving in about 10 weeks. There is still a ton of stuff to be done. We're making progress, but only two rooms are "done" with the exception of the flooring. So Kate and I spend Saturday and Sunday at the other house painting her bedroom and the youngest girls' bedroom.

Paige and Allie want a pink bedroom. As Paige informed me, "Not a light pink, but a pink that you notice right away. Like a hot pink." At the paint store, I purchased an intense light pink. No way were they getting hot pink. The other bedrooms are going to be so intense, I need one room that won't give me a head-ache.

Paige and Allie's room was covered with yucky wall paper that the previous owner had written on with permanent markers. The walls and ceilings were completely covered with foul language and the closet door contained an outline drawing of a human with exaggerated male parts. We tore down the wall paper and covered the drawing with primer immediately. Here's what it looked like at that point.

Saturday, I got two coats of primer on the walls. We had purchased oil based Kilz for the best chance of keeping the permanent markers from bleeding through the paint. Mike had bought the primer a few weeks ago and the cans had set inside the house with the temperature set at 40 degrees. The primer was the consistency of thick frosting. Although it was difficult to work with thick primer, the coverage was terrific! The heat was left on a normal temperature when we left so the primer could dry.

Sunday, the walls got two coats of bubble gum pink, the ceiling got two coats of white and the base boards and trim received one coat of semi-gloss white. We ran out of time, so I will need to do a second coat on the trim and windows next weekend. Here's the results.

Meanwhile, Kaitlyn was hard at work getting her room painted. Kate had chosen the long, narrow bedroom that needs a different light fixture. Her walls were also covered with graffiti. The previous owner painted the walls white and used black for the ceiling, baseboard, and windows. Katie had a slightly different vision for her room. While painting on Sunday, the light fixture died so she painted by flashlight for an hour. She'll be spending one day next weekend finishing her room. Here are the before pictures.

Two coats of primer on the walls were completed. Here is a picture of her with her color of choice. The trim, baseboard, and ceiling will be repainted black. She is also planning on adding a zigzag stripe across each wall in black. (Don't ever say that I don't let my children express themselves!)

Why would someone do this to their home? The profanity and crude drawings?!?!

Was this a foreclosure? I'm so glad you had vision to see through the mess. I'm sure you will make the house "respectable" again and fill it with love.

My parents bought a foreclosed home 25+ years ago and the same kinds of things were done (on purpose) before the owners left...curtain rods pulled out of the walls, writings and other damage...

You've really got a lot of work to do...and you've already done so much. You should be proud!!!

We purchased a foreclosed home. The previous owners didn't want to move and didn't do any repairs. The children took their frustrations out on the walls. We won't discuss the cat and all the carpeting throughout the house. YUCK!

Mike and I love the property and were able to see that the "bones" of the place were good. I'll be posting more before and after photos as we get closer to finishing.
