A Day in My Life

Today's To Do List: Do some laundry, ironing, and make Christmas cookies. If time, do some Christmas sewing.

What actually happened today:

7:20am Wake up and get dressed. Kiss Mike and Steve good-bye. They will be spending the day at the other house putting up drywall in the family room.

7:45 Coffee and check email. Call kids to wake up. Fix breakfast for Paige and Allie.

8:15 Fold load of laundry; start new load. Iron 3 shirts.

8:40 Pack one box of brick-a-brack. Vacuum family room furniture. Iron 3 more shirts.

9:15 Do Bible study with Paige and Allie, answer phone, flip laundry. Break up disagreement between Madelyn and Joe.

10:10 Fold Laundry, iron 2 shirts, pack 1 box containing framed art work, candles and candle holders. Say good-bye to Amy and Katie who are going shopping.

10:50 Answer shouts in small girls' bedroom. Discover that they have broken all the mattress-support slats in the top bunk bed, by jumping on the bed. Discipline small girls. Briefly, consider making small girls sleep in sleeping bags on the floor of their room. Decide to be nice. Call Mike and ask him to bring home more wooden slats for bed. Move mattresses to floor of girls' bedroom.

11:15 Flip another load of laundry. Teach English to 8th grader. Nag 6th grader to complete math assignment. Trip over Legos in hallway (small girls couldn't play on floor of their bedroom; they decided to play in hall leading to bathroom.), count to ten, ask girls to pick up Lego toys.

11:37 Begin lunch preparation. Fold laundry. Eat lunch. Pay bill.

12:00 Wash, dry, and put away dishes. Vacuum floor of family room, put away folded laundry.

12:30 Help Paige and Allie wrap their gifts for the sibling exchange. Yell at Joe for making the dog bark incessantly. Take Midol.

12:50 Flip a load of laundry. Fold clothes. Iron 3 shirts and 1 pair of slacks.

1:22 Get recipe to make cookies. Discover that corn (left over from last night's dinner) has leaked out of container that was left on its side with lid askew. The bottom shelf and two drawers are covered with canned corn juice. The butter that was purchased to make cookies has rested in corn juice overnight. Call 13-year old and reminded him that he is too old to leave food leaking all over the place in the refrigerator. Checked clock to see if it is too early for more Midol. It is. Cleaned refrigerator. Make second cup of coffee, which is unheard of around here.

2:15 Hear about shopping trip when Amy and Kaitlyn return. Katie leaves to do house cleaning job with elderly lady down the street. Return to making batch of cookies. Took picture of "Little Tree" being cut down. Give directions on making an X from wood to use as a tree stand.

2:45 My mom, sister, and nephew arrive to fill jugs with water. Visit with them for a short while. Take picture of Joe with decorated "Little Tree".

3:15 Katie returns with Christmas gifts from house cleaning client, who has adopted my kids as her honorary grandchildren. Children ooh and aah over chocolate letters, Dutch cookies, and current bread.

3:30 Mix up batch of Spritz cookies. Show Madelyn how to use cookie press. Bake cookies. Btw, I really don't like using cookie presses. It's tough to get the cookies the right thickness. Fortunately, the children are more than willing to eat the "rejects".

4:15 Get Paige and Allie ready to go to Pioneers. Today is the Christmas party. The kids drew names and were supposed to buy $4 gifts. It would have been easier if we had a $5-$7 budget. The leaders are really conscientious about trying to not be a burden on families.

5:00 Make myself a sandwich for dinner. Slice and bake Neapolitan cookies that had previously been prepared and the dough froze. Clean up the baking mess in the kitchen. Display the cookies on the new dessert server I bought around Thanksgiving. Flip Load of laundry.

6:02 Upload photos and update journal for this day. Play around on computer.

7:00 Work on lesson plans for upcoming semester. Check that everyone is on target with assignments.

8:15 Greet Mike and Steve who returned from Robotics. Call Amy to see how the party and McDonald's run is going. Am forced to quit working for the day. Hubby wants to spend some time with me! Steve is cutting the supports for the bunk beds.

The other kids should return home around 9-9:30.
