We told Katie several months ago that she was not going to be able to continue her job at the Battle Creek library after we move. Every now and then, she would explain that her boss was going to try to get her 8 hour shifts so it would be worth her while to drive in from the new house, which is one hour away. There are a number of reasons why this isn't feasible. 1. The drive is on major highways and the traffic around one city is too crazy for an inexperienced driver. 2. It's January and there are several months of icy roads before spring. 3. She makes minimum wage. She would be spending way too much of her earnings on gas to get to work. 4. She doesn't have her regular license yet. I would need to drive 4 hours each day so she could work. 5. I'm currently driving my oldest daughter's car. It isn't fair to rack up so many miles on another person's car.
This reasons have been mentioned to Katie whenever she mentioned keeping her library job after we move. She hasn't heard. Actually she hear, but she was hoping that Mike and I would cave in a let her keep the job.
We are moving next Monday. Last night, Mike asked Katie if she had given her notice at work. She hadn't. He told her that she needed to give two weeks notice today. I'm going to drive her in next week. Katie is a mess. She cried for several hours last night. She's still giving death glares to Mike and me today. I feel bad about her unhappiness. She's feeling at a loose end and doesn't want to leave the city we currently live in. This is going to be a tough move for her.
I tried to explain to her that I would spend the next couple of weeks driving her around to apply for jobs in the new town and in the large city 20 minutes north of the new house. Katie isn't interested. It's going to be a long few weeks.
