Wednesday, my latest prescription of bifocal contacts arrived. Wow, can I see better. The eye doctor and I had a long discussion on my options. My right eye is causing me to see double. The doctor explained that it's because of my near-sightness and astigmatism working against each other. The problem will only continue to get worse.
We discussed having surgery, but he explained that with my prescription, I would need two surgeries. The first lasik surgery would correct up to a certain point, but would not fully correct my eyes. A second surgery would be necessary after a short period of time. There is a high probability that the second surgery would replace my lens (similar to cataract surgery). The replaced lens would not be able to focus like a real lens. I would need to wear glasses for all close up tasks.
Another option is to replace the bifocal in my right eye with a distance lens and read with my left eye only.
The decision doesn't need to be made for another year, but I will be spending a lot of time weighing the pros and cons of each.
On a positive note, I should be able to drive at night with my bifocal glasses. Woohoo!
