Children's Impressions

We've had a lot of fireflies out lately. My children have had a great time catching and releasing them in our backyard. My 9 year old caught a firefly that had an injured wing. She put it into a bug house that she had recently built. The two of us looked up what fireflies eat because she wanted to care for it. I explained that it wouldn't live long. My 5 year old mentioned that I would need to fix the injured wing, so it could recover and be "let go." She was heartbroken to learn that I'm not able to repair insect wings. In a disgruntled voice she said, "Mom, I thought you could fix things!"

It's unbelievable that I have reached my advanced years without this important skill.

My kids caught fireflies at my mom's put them into a jar with holes poked in the lid and then used them as a night light. In the morning upon awaking, they let them go (most, if not all were still living). They thought it the best thing ever.

Thanks for the smile!

One of the hardest parts of growing up is finding out that Mom & Dad are human, too. (And it's not easy for Mom & Dad, either!)
