I've been spending much of my time driving lately. In search of new books on tape to help pass the time, I noticed that Christopher Paul Curtis had a new book. Several years ago, the children and I read
Bud, Not Buddy, which is one of my all time favorite children's book. One of the character's in Bud, Not Buddy is a bass player in a jazz band. My father used to play bass in jazz bands in the Chicago area, so I enjoyed hearing about the life-style of the musicians.
Elijah of Buxton, the newest Christopher Paul Curtis book is the story about former slaves who escaped to freedom in Canada. There is a lot of humor and the main character is very likable. I love how the author is able to write so accurately from a child's viewpoint. While I haven't quite finished the book, I highly recommend it. All of my children have enjoyed listening to the story, so it can interest a wide range of ages.
