Christmas Sewing

I managed to get quite a bit of sewing accomplished over the weekend. One of the projects was so successful that I'm planning on making several of them after Christmas for other members of the family. The project idea came from an Internet site. I added a couple of pockets and other features that will meet the recipient's needs better than the listed instructions. Isn't the Internet great? What a blessing for Christmas ideas!

Allie has a birthday on Monday. My youngest two girls wear the same size and have tons of clothes. Unfortunately the two girls do not share the same taste in clothing styles. Paige loves dresses or jeans. Allie likes dresses or slacks without zippers. She hates jeans. I was able to whip up several skirts and pairs of slacks for her big day. Time ran out to make shirts to accompany her new duds, so I'll probably run to Kohl's Friday to complete her new outfits.

My mom gave me some quilted fabric that she didn't want any longer. I used the black quilted fabric to make curtains for Katie's bedroom. She is so cold all the time, that I thought the quilted fabric might help keep her warm. Black wouldn't have been my color of choice, but her room is acid green and black, so the curtains fit in well. I trimmed the curtains is neon-striped ribbon. They turned out cute. Katie and Amy like them, so my job is done. ;)

I'll post pictures of the sewing projects after the holidays. Too many of my children are reading my blog regularly, so it's no longer possible to discuss Christmas projects in detail.

Getting Caught Up

It's been a really busy week, but I'm beginning to feel less behind on my life. We had Thanksgiving at our home as normal. Amy picked up my mom in the morning, so she was able to celebrate with us. After a huge meal, we all played Uno and Crazy Eights for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Mom and I spent a couple of hours talking. She's really struggling with depression. The chemotherapy causes depression and her life is really stressful right now. I will need to make a more concerted effort to get over to her house regularly to help keep her spirits up.

At 6:00am Thanksgiving morning, I went shopping to get the sale items that will be Christmas gifts. There were more sales at 12:01 Friday morning that I had planned to get, but my stomach was upset from the rich food, so I skipped that sale.

The early Black Friday sales were easy to get at 6:30 this morning. The differences between shopping in our former city and our current small town are huge. I parked 3 cars away from the front door. Received assistance from a sales clerk for the items I needed and was second in line at the register. All of my shopping completed in less than 1 hour! Amazing!!!

The kids slept until 10 this morning and then helped me put up one of the Christmas trees. We will put up the second tree tomorrow afternoon. The furniture is a little cramped in the family room, but it almost always is during December. The gifts also got wrapped this afternoon.

Wednesday, the kids and I cleaned house and got all the laundry and ironing completed. It is so much easier to do the Christmas decorating when all the normal chores are up to date. I'm so thankful for my wonderful, cheerful helpers. Thanksgiving would have been a lot more stressful without them this year.

Katie has offered to watch the younger girls for the afternoon, so I can get so much needed sewing completed. What a great daughter!

Christmas Sewing

A dear friend presented me with some fabric last weekend. Instead of making costumes earlier in the week, I spent last Monday and Tuesday sewing Christmas projects.

Christmas is Right Around the Corner!

Our many huge maple trees began to drop a lot of leaves today and I realized that soon it will be Halloween. I haven't started my Christmas preparations! Four of my children have birthdays during the last 6 weeks of the year. Two of them are between Christmas and New Year's Eve. Normally, I spend August and September sewing clothes for the children to give as Christmas presents. The bulk of the non-home-made gifts are purchased in October and I am finished Christmas shopping by the day after Thanksgiving. The birthday gifts are purchased the first week or two of December.

It seems like I'm to zealous with getting the purchases done early, but I've found that the birthday celebrations, family gatherings, Christmas program rehearsals, holiday performances, and parades make November and December pass too quickly. I get irritable and loose my enthusiasm for sledding, decorating, and cooking when I've over-tired. (Kind of like a toddler.)

This year, my normal method has been scrapped. I spent way too much time in August, September, and October walking/hiking in the woods. My crafty time has gone to creating stamps for letterboxing. I've been selfish. The terrible part is that I'm not even repentant. I would do the same thing again.

Unfortunately, now I will need to get myself in gear and get going on my sewing projects and shopping. Some "wish lists" were taken from some of the kids Sunday on and I'll begin my shopping tomorrow. This will be the first year we have Christmas in our "new" home. Places to shop are not as plentiful in this town as in the last city where we lived. I will need to spend a lot more time driving this year. Bah Humbug!

Weekend Update

Friday, Katie had a cousin spend the night. It was nice to see Lauren again. Now that the girls are older, they have a difficult time getting together as much as they did when both were both homeschooled. Katie is so busy working and taking classes at the community college; Lauren is involved with a lot of school activities. They enjoyed the night but didn't get much sleep. I think they went to sleep around 5:00 am.

Saturday, I took all the at-home kids to see the Christmas parade. They weather was perfect, around 50 degrees, with clear skies. A few years ago, the parade organizers placed a maximum amount on the number of participants. The parade used to last up to three hours; this year's parade was 1 1/2 hours. My younger girls were still interested when Santa Claus made his appearance. The kids got a ton of candy, which everyone agreed to share equally.

After we got home, Allie started to complain about a sore in her mouth. Mike inspected her mouth and discovered an abscess in her gums. One side of her face began to swell, so we took her to the emergency room. The ER doctor thinks that she got a popcorn hull or kernel jammed in her gum that eventually turned into the abscess. Her swelling was lanced and she was given a prescription for antibiotics. The dentist's office is closed on Mondays, so we'll get her an appointment tomorrow morning. We got back from the emergency room around 1:00am.

Sunday, I managed to make several clear paths in my bedroom. Packing is not helping me keep my bedroom organized! I made one pair of lounge pants, two pairs of slacks, and 5 Barbie outfits for various people for Christmas. Hopefully, the Christmas sewing will get completed in the next two weeks.

The outdoor lights got put up on the bushes in front of the house. We aren't able to place lights on the large pine tree because the ladders are all in Three Rivers. The kids suggested that we bring one ladder back here, but I don't want to haul a ladder back and forth.
