My blood pressure has been really high lately. I know that I should go to the doctor, but I'd rather not go on blood pressure medication. The main problem is that I'm not getting enough exercise and carry to many pounds for my height. Mike and I have been talking about joining the Y Center again, but it's 25 minutes away. The rest of the family is outside living active lives, while I cook, clean and do laundry. None of these activities provide enough exercise. We'll probably join the Y Center when in the fall when the kids aren't outside as much as they are now.
To solve my lack of consistent exercise, we bought an indoor recumbent bike for me to use. I'll have the opportunity to workout after the kids are asleep or when they are working on their independent school work. I'm going to keep a log of my exercise time to encourage me to get exercise on a daily basis.

Getting Back in the Swing
My daily exercise regiment went really well during the fall and early winter, but by the middle of February I was only swimming 3 times each week and never working out in the gym. There were too many other things going on in my life and the kids needed more assistance with school, etc.
My oldest daughter returned home from college for the summer last Thursday. Guess who is my new work-out buddy? She's planning on dragging me to the gym every day this week for 45 minute workouts. Next week, she wants to add an early morning bike ride to my schedule. It will be good to have more energy again. Losing more inches off my stomach and hips will be welcome also.
I find it much easier to work out if I know that someone is depending on me to be there. If it's just me going to exercise, I often use the allotted time to tutor someone in math, prepare a more nutritious meal, or clean a bathroom. In the fall, I made the time an important part of my daily schedule and I need to prioritize my exercise needs again. My blood pressure is up and I'm not getting any younger. If I don't get myself in better shape, it is probable that I will not see my youngest two graduate from college.

Wii Fit
My in-laws sent money for me to purchase presents for the kids at Christmas time. One of the family gifts was going to be a Wii Fit. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find one in our area. We've been looking since December and finally were able to purchase one on Sunday.
The Wii will allow 8 people to have a profile. Since there are 9 people in our family, the two youngest girls are sharing one account. The profile charts the players BMI, weight, and provides a fitness age. I think the fitness age is skewed by balance and posture. My fitness age is 2 years younger than my actual age. My husband's fitness age is 2 years older than his actual age and he's in better physical shape than I.
I'm really pleased at the game. There are a variety of exercises and games, each person can pick a goal to work towards, and the way the game is organized allows some friendly competition to spur on players. I am the current ski jump, yoga, and step champ! We've been enjoying the game and I'm getting some much needed extra exercise each day.

I Finally See the Light
Have you ever had one of those Aha moments when you feel stupid for not making the discovery sooner? Well, the light bulb was finally lit in my head on Saturday. I've been working out quite a bit during the last 2 months. The problem is that my feet are a mess. I've had up to 15 blisters on my feet at one time. The skin around my toes is peeling away from the toenails (and no I don't have athletes foot). At one point, there was a 6" long trench on the bottom of my foot. Sorry to be so descriptive.
Saturday, I was talking to my mom about our Y center experiences and the light bulb went off in my head. The kids and I swim in heavily chlorinated 90 degree water for 30 minutes every morning. Then we dress and I drop the small kids off at child watch so that I can workout uninterrupted. Usually, I walk/run on the treadmill first. My nice soft, wrinkly skin is being ripped to shreds. Duh! Hopefully, with a few minor adjustments my feet will heal and fell much better.
