The last week has been spent in waiting rooms. Monday, our family had 6 dental appointments and 1 doctor appointment. The dental appointments were all for cleanings and only 2 cavities were discovered. Katie had a doctor appointment on Monday for her weight loss. She was down to 94 pounds and I was concerned. The doctor ordered several tests for her thyroid, blood sugar and iron count. The results won't be in for another week or two.
Tuesday, my mom had her second cataract surgery. The surgery went well and she is seeing much better. She was surprised at how bad her eye sight had been. I'm so thankful that everything went well and that she will be able to drive again.
Wednesday, Katie had a small cavity filled.
Thursday, Allie had an upset stomach and a night of vomiting.
Next week, Joe will go to the dentist for his 6 month cleaning and then we are through with the dentist for 6 months. I still need to get appointments for the children to get their annual physical.

Searching for Dentists and Doctors
I went to the dentist today for a cleaning. The best part of the visit was that I don't need a root canal. I've been experiencing some discomfort (notice I didn't say pain) and thought that it might be a bad tooth. It ended up being wisdom teeth that are moving and trying to come through. The dentist doesn't think that I need to have an extraction at this point, so I'm happy.
The other members of the family were able to get scheduled for cleanings in July and August. We wanted to see what I thought of the dentist office before transferring everyone. Paige and Allie have been begging for another dentist appointment. It's hard to believe that they are my children.
My friend who has contacts in our area mentioned that people in our town don't go to local doctors. They drive to the large town about 30 minutes away. The drive won't be too bad, but I liked being a short drive to the pediatrician in our last area. Next week, I'll call some recommended doctors and try to set up appointments for everyone to get check-ups.

What Was I Thinking?
Did you know that if your dental crown is loose and you chew a piece of gum, the crown will come completely off?
Not my brightest moment. I have an appointment on Thursday morning to get the crown re-glued. This is a new dentist in our new area. He came highly recommended by the specialist who did Steve's root canal. If I am satisfied with the work, we will transfer all of our kids to this office.

Another Root Canal
Steve finally got into the dentist today. He needs a root canal on his front tooth. The root was damaged when the air soft pellet broke off the tooth. The root canal will happen on Thursday morning. The dentist provided a prescription for Tylenol 3 to help him handle the pain until Thursday. Poor kid!

Frustrations with Dentists
First off, it's important to know that I hate going to the dentist. Therefore, Mike took over the duties of getting the children regular dental appointments. He does a great job. Every 6 months all the children and Mike go to the dentist for check-ups. If a filling is needed, the appointment is scheduled as soon as possible.
In late August, Allie's appointment discovered that she had a small cavity in one of her baby teeth. Since she's only 4, all her teeth are baby teeth. That same week, the cavity was filled. Less than three months later an abscess appeared on her gums. The ER doctor thought that it might have been caused by a popcorn kernel or hull. Today, we learned from the dentist that the tooth is so bad, they want to remove the baby tooth "roots" and hope that the tooth stays in place to keep her teeth from moving. I want to know how a four year child, who brushes her teeth 3 times each day and goes to the dentist every 6 months needs a "root canal" on a tooth that received dental care less than three months ago.
Did the dentist do a poor job with the simple filling? Does she genetically have bad teeth? How can we keep something similar from happening again? I'm frustrated because this is not an area where I'm knowledgeable. Maybe it's time to simply switch dentists. My confidence has been greatly shaken.
