Weekend Update
Tomorrow, my youngest nephew is getting baptized. My sister asked me to be one of his sponsors. Our family had planned to all attend church together tomorrow morning, but Paige has broken out in a high fever/sore throat again. So Mike will be staying home with her. I'm not sure how they are going to treat her this time. She finished her last antibiotic just a few days ago. I think that she has tried all the various antibiotics in the last 6-8 weeks. Her system really needs some time to develop good bacteria again.
Steve's good friend, Brian, came to visit this weekend. I was able to bring him to our house after robotics on Friday. The boys always have a good time together. Brian fits so well with our family that I frequently forget that we have company. Katie, Joe, Steve and Brian stayed up late last night watching DVD's. Poor Joe had to get up early this morning to deliver his papers. He overslept this morning, but I had woke up early and managed to get him out the door in time to deliver the papers before the deadline.
Allie, Paige and I prepared food for our family Superbowl bash. Our family aren't football people, but we always watch the Superbowl and eat lots of special foods. Allie began planning the Superbowl menu back in October. Yesterday, she asked if we could play games and Wii during the Superbowl party, not realizing the point in the party was to watch the game. Okay, we watch the commercials. And eat snacks.
Mike helped the two youngest girls make a fairy house last night while I was driving the older children to robotics. The fairy house has a beautiful chandelier, jeweled beads hanging from the walls, ornate windows, and framed pictures hanging on the walls. The three of them are planning on making furniture and knick-knacks next week. I was surprised by the attention to detail that the three of them used. When they finish, I'll post pictures.
All the children have been sledding and snowboarding a lot this weekend. Yesterday, I realized that Paige and Allie are doing jumps off the ramp that the kids built in our backyard. They built up a large mound of packed snow on the edge of our deck (which is 3' off the ground) and them packed snow next to the deck to make a hill. About 10' further, they built another mound. The kids slide down the deck-hill and to jumps on the mound in the yard. It was a little nerve wracking to watch Allie try to turn around in the air, but I solved the problem by no longer watching.

Snow, Snow, and More Snow
We ended up with 10+ inches of snow here. Unfortunately, most of our snow shovels are at the other house. Oops! Steve and Joe went out early this morning and cleared our cars. They also shoveled around the actual cars and a path to the back door. What they didn't do was behind the cars until the end of the driveway. I needed to run to the grocery store to get some food so I quickly backed out of the drive. The car swerved and slid, but didn't get stuck.
While I was gone, the snow-plows came by doing a main path down the center of the street. More snow was pushed into the end of our drive creating a mound. When I returned home with a full trunk, no one had completed any more shoveling. With the gas pedal pushed to the floorboards, I struggled to get into the driveway. The car finally cleared the driveway entry sideways. After spinning the car around (who knew that I could be a professional stunt driver) and coming to a halt, the kids helped me unload the groceries. They worked in shifts the rest of the afternoon to clear the drive and 264' of sidewalk that we are responsible for keeping free of snow.
The kids are tuckered out and I'm chilly. This looks like a great night to stay inside and sip hot coffee or cocoa. Only 5 more weeks until spring!

Fun in the Snow
We had our first significant snowfall last week. Schools were closed for several days and the neighborhood children were outside playing. Joe, Steve and Madelyn made a huge snow fort in the front yard. It was about 30 inches tall, with a diameter of 8'. I couldn't figure out why they put the fort right next to our driveway, until I spotted the 12" tall, 2' diameter fort on the other side of the driveway. The forts were facing each other and obviously a major snowball war had taken place with the neighbor boy.
The backyard is sporting a huge igloo, that all of my children can enter at the same time. Paige made a snow lawn chair on Saturday and spent hours sitting in her snow-chair.
Sunday after supper, Paige and Allie realized that they hadn't made any snowmen this year. They raced outside to build snowmen in the dark. After 30 minutes, they came inside searching for "large carrots" to use for snowmen noses. I was declared the Best Mom Ever because I always let them take carrots when they make snowmen. It always amazes me when they make similar statements. Giving the kids a few carrots when they make snowmen seems no big deal to me, but it's very important to my 5 and 6 year olds.
Madelyn and Joe spent several hours outside playing with friends across the street. Their friends have a long, steep driveway and the neighborhood kids went sledding. The friends don't own sleds and we have 7 or 8, which were shared with various children. There were many shouts of joy and tons of giggling.
I really enjoyed watching all the activity outside this week. Most of the time, my children are the only ones who play outdoors in the winter. This snowfall reminded me of my childhood, when neighborhood cliques were broken down as all the children caroused in the snow together.

It's Too Soon...
We woke up to big, fluffy flakes of snow falling gently to the ground. And staying there. Not melting as it reaches the ground. The snow is really beautiful. But, I'm not ready. The garage needs to be more organized. I really want to park my van in the garage this winter. The roads were very slick and I slid through a couple of intersections on our way to swimming this morning. The children are excited. Choruses of "Can we go sledding after lunch?", "It's it a SNOW day?", and "I get the good snow shovel!" could be heard throughout the morning.

When we returned from the library and swimming, Madelyn ran outside to shovel the snow. She managed to make our first snowman this year. Somehow, I just can't match their excitement. I must be getting old. Joe went outside after lunch to finish shoveling off the driveway. They are always so excited to shovel at the beginning of the snow season. By January the tune will definitely change. I need to enjoy this while I can.
